Svjetlan was born in Zagreb in 1961. He gained a diploma in sculpture from the Brera Academy in Milan in 1985.A painter, graphic designer and sculptor, he now lives in the Croatian capital. He has worked for various publishing houses in Europe: Franco Cosimo Panini, Modena; Bohem Press, Zurich; Mladinska Knjiga, Ljubljana; Helbling, Innsbruck; OBV, Vienna; Langenscheidt-Longman, Munich; Algoritam, Zagreb; Carthusia, Milan; Artebambini, Bazzano (Bologna). His work features in almost all of the most important exhibitions in the world and his illustrated books have been published in more than 20 countries. He has exhibited in personal shows in Munich, Mantua, Busto Arsizio, Lissone, Bari, Budapest, Lisbon, Zagreb, Maribor, Ljubljana, in 2008 at the PAN in Naples and in 2009 at the Gallery of Modern Art in Genoa. He received significant critical acclaim at the Bratislava Illustration Biennale (BIB) in 2001, in Bari in 2003, at the OITA-Illustration Biennale in Japan in 2004, in Zagreb in 2004, in Brazil in 2005, and in Zagreb and Pola in 2006. In 2007 he won first prize for best published book, awarded by the Ministry for Culture in Spain, for the book Gran libro de los retratos de animales, OQO, Pontevedra, 2006. In Italy Bohem Press has brought out eight of his books in the Pazzoo series, published in over 20 languages. Svjetlan teaches illustration at the Academy for Fine Arts in Zagreb and is one of the teachers at the International Illustration School in Sàrmede.
